11 Texts to Send to Someone Who’s Freaking Out

Sometimes a simple text is all it takes to remind people that they aren’t alone in this crazy world.

Whether it’s cannabis-induced paranoia or just your run-of-the-mill anxiety, sometimes having someone on the other end of the phone offering support can be a total lifesaver.

If you haven’t heard from your friend in a while, or if you sense that they’ve been covering up how they feel, it might be time to reach out and see if they need anything.

Here are 11 texts to send someone who’s freaking out:

“I found a great meditation this morning! I think you might also like it!”

This one is comforting in two ways: it shows that you’re thinking about them, but not necessarily expecting a response. It also lets them know that they're not the only one who can benefit from meditation, since you're doing it too. Simply forward the link to your fave meditation and share how relaxing it was for you.

“Let me know if there is literally anything I can do for you.”

Even if you’re not in the same city/state, offering to help can go a long way for someone who is freaking out. This will not only remind them that they are not alone, but it will also remind them that it’s okay to ask for help–especially when the cannabis-induced anxiety comes creeping in.

“Want to go on a walk with me?”

Sometimes, the best thing to do if you’re anxious is GTFO of your house and get some fresh air. Make it sound like something you were going to do anyway so they don't feel pressured.

“I know it’s tough, but this feeling won’t last forever.”

This one serves as a gentle reminder that, even though it never feels like it in the moment, anxious feelings do eventually fade. Just remember that you can’t speed up the process or talk someone out of anxiety. (If it was possible to snap out of it, they would.) You can, however, validate their feelings while also offering supportive and more reality-based messages of hope and well-being.

“I just made this great playlist–give it a listen when you get a chance!”

Music fixes almost anything. It’s actually science. Share the link to one of your favorite playlists, or create one just for them.

“Just checking in on you :)”

Simple, straight-to-the-point, easy to respond to if they’re feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes just knowing that someone cares enough to reach out is a huge relief to someone who is going through it.

"Yikes, tough news today–how are you holding up?"

This is good for your anxious, news-binging friend. If you notice something particularly upsetting or stressful being featured over and over on the news cycle (pretty standard these day, really) you might want to send them a short text to see how they're doing.

“Let’s take a virtual deep breath together!”

If their anxiety is kicking in, remind your friend of the powers of deep breathing. Offer to pause and take a deep breath with them, which will cool both of you down and provide a little bit of peace if someone is feeling shitty.

“I’ll be driving by your part of town later–can I bring you a smoothie?”

We all need connection right now more than ever. If your friend isn’t coping well with their stress and anxiety, offer to swing by with an iced coffee, bagel, or green smoothie. Oftentimes, people forget to eat when they’re uber-stressed, so use this as a gentle reminder that they need to both eat and get a little change of scenery. Chances are they’ll enjoy the company and appreciate the distraction.

“I’ve been feeling really sad about [blank] lately. How are you feeling about all of this?”

You may not fully understand what they’re going through, but relating provides connection. Offering your own challenge makes you human–and empathetic. Use this text as an opener, but be careful that you don’t make your stress the focal point. This one lets your friend know you’re thinking about them, and that they’re not alone in their sadness.

“This [blank] made me think of you!”

This text offers a small gift–and requires no response (though it’s nice to get one, and it’s great if you do.)
